I never thought I would find another food that I would like more than Indian food, but when I got to Thailand had an epic experience: a burst of flavor and pleasure flooded into my mouth and since then Thai Food became my favorite food in ze world!
After my first three months in the country of smiles I tried many different dishes and today almost with certitude I’ll look for a Thai restaurant if I stay for several weeks at one destination.
In Santiago de Chile has been increasing in the last years the number of restaurants serving food from as far away as India, Europe and there are very few that serve food from Thailand.

As a good food lover I always look for new places to eat and Santiago is the city where most restaurants I’ve been to since I lived for many years in it. The Thai Food offer in Chile is small and in a visit to the Market Persa BiobÃo (probably the most unique market to visit in the city) I found my favorite place to eat Thai Food in Santiago Chile.
Created by expat Thais living in Chile, introducing Thai Isan
Thai Isan Restaurant is a type of ‘picada’, a Chilean expression for those very simple, small restaurants you keep going not for the location or the fancy decoration, but only for the people and the quality of their food.
Located in the heart of the Persa Bio Bio, the biggest and most entertaining market to visit in Santiago, this place has become my favorite in terms of Thai food in the capital of Chile.
They have a simple but quite extensive, with reasonable prices that are around 4,500 Chilean pesos. For my taste in Thai Isan they have the best Tom Yum Soup in the whole city and their Pad Thai is very tasty too.
Perhaps most unique about this place is its spicy levels scale, ranging from 0 to 7, with 7 being the ‘spicy thai’ would be for many inedible! For me a level 3 is perfect and keeps me happy for a whole day. I’ve read spicy food helps generate endorphins and why we should eat a small daily amount to keep us happier.
They have one dessert, which is fried ice cream, a Thai dessert that is based on fried bread that have inside a scoop of ice cream. Interesting and different.
I talked with Yodi, who works for this small restaurant serving Thai Food in Santiago de Chile. She came to Chile to work as a chef and at the same time to have the benefit of being able to learn Spanish.
What she liked most is the weather, which is much cooler than in Thailand “here I can walk all day in the sun” and she also told us that she finds Chileans to be very friendly and it’s easier to make friends in the country.
Yodi learned to cook from his mother at age 14 and decided to open this restaurant because Thai food in Chile is still something very new and well received by customers. Her favorite Thai dish is the Lab ped (I still don’t have the pleasure of trying!) and her favorite Chilean, the barbeques or ‘asados’.
In Chile the community of Thai people is not too big, there are living there around 50 Thai people and she feels very special and unique, which is a benefit to her business, which she hopes to develop and strengthen with a catering service to special dietary needs and menus specially prepared for each client.
Like many others, Yodi considers the thing she dislikes and find biggest weakness in bussiness in Chile is in service. I can assure you that there is a huge difference when we compare to Thailand, where the quality of service is better than anyone in the world.
Thank you for your blog! We are moving to Santiago next month from Atlanta, Georgia and this helps a lot. Thank you again and can’t wait to try out the Thai food you suggested. 🙂
I’m glad about your news! Let me know how is it going and if you need any advice or help. I’ll might be around in late July, we can go and eat there together 😉
That would be great! I don’t know anyone in Chile! Stay in touch.
You mentioned that you love Indian food? Best Indian food in Santiago: go! I’ve tried New horizon (Comida hindu) and been told to try Jewel of India. Also, do you know of any Ethiopian restaurants?
I love both Indian restaurants you mention, very different rates and offer. Until now, I’ve never heard about Ethiopian restaurants in Santiago, if you find one please let me know! 😉
We’ve been travelling in Latin America for nearly 6 months and haven’t had any good Thai food yet! We tried a couple of times but it definitely wasn’t right – we’ll be in Santiago in November so will look out for this place.
Hi Jon! I’m sure you’ll love it! I can survive longer in Santiago thank’s to them. If I’m there maybe we can go together to have a Tom Yum Soup 😉
