Best Empanadas are Chilean!
There are many countries where this filled dough is consumed. Since ancient times in Greece and some Arab countries they have made this sort of bread stuffed with the most varied ingredients.
It is said that they came to Chile with the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. This delicacy was developed into what is nowadays: one of the traditional foods in the country.
Salty or sweet, fried or baked, there is a wide range of ‘Empanadas’ in Chile. The most traditional (and my favorite too) is the one filled with beef, called ‘Empanada de Pino’.
Chilean Empanadas de Pino are a dough made with wheat flour and butter basically stuffed with beef, onion, olives and boiled egg. Some add raisins to the stuffing. Ideally baked in clay oven, which gives it a unique slightly smoky flavor.
Fried empanadas can be found stuffed with beef, seafood, cheese, or cheese with almost anything. Generally in the villages near the ocean is where you’ll find this kind of empanadas stuffed with sea food.
Empanadas are consumed daily by many Chileans and mainly during the holidays, in the month of September , there are many people who remember eating.
Usually they go with lunches, as part of snack or anytime when hunger comes during the day.
In the village of Pomaire , very close to Santiago, Chilean empanadas are made up to 1 Kilo! These may include even chicken legs inside !
Annually the place that makes the best Empanadas in Santiago is chosen every year, there where some shops who make them with little pieces and not ground beef, and its flavor remains similar over time, this ones are always the best!
Price
The cost of Chilean empanadas usually is around $ 1,000 CHP (about 2 USD ) . Its value will depend primarily on the location and size. There are special mini pies for parties or larger than 1 Kilo, but the most common are about the size of a hand.
