One of the things I love the most about Luxembourg it is all the small and lovely towns all around the country.

It is in one of those lovely villages that, once a year happen the Nut Festival, called in local language as Veiner Nëssmoort.

In Vianden, located 50km (31 miles) from Luxembourg City, this market started on 1934 but was not after 1970 they started to do it every year, at every second Sunday of October. Local nut producers offer a Festival were they sell their nut production as well as many nutty products.vianden-4174

At the Nut Festival you can find everything you can imagine made with walnuts, from liqueurs to bread and sausages, and also traditional Luxembourgian food like the delicious “Gromperekichelcher” –like the German Kartoffelpuffer– it is a fried potato pancake you can find all over this region in different European countries. As any food festival there’s also many alcoholic options and here the star it’s obviously: nuts. It is possible to taste different kind of liqueurs and buy shots or bottles of them. Funny fact it is the item I missed the most was actually whole nuts.

Two things you might want to consider before heading Vianden at Nut Festival it is It can get really crowded and It is perhaps a festival more adult oriented, so might be not so funny for families with kids.vianden-4173

Vianden it is mainly  its beautiful castle and for being a tourist destination in the area. In the middle of rolling hills covered by trees, with pedestrian streets, at this little village there’s no cars inside the main streets. Besides the castle, there is a chairlift taking you up to get a scenic view of the village ans surroundings.vianden-4178

How to get to Vianden and the Nut Festival

If you are going from Luxembourg City you can go by car and it will take around 50 minute drive via the N17 road. You might consider that most parking in the village is limited to 3 hours and they are paid and located up the hill.

The village it is known for being motorcycle friendly and some days can be really noisy and crowded by them.

If getting there by local transport you can take the train that runs every hour and then change in Ettelbruck to take the bus #570.  See www.mobiliteit.lu for details.
