There are certain things that happen around food and Chilean restaurants and make me laugh every time.
( Go see ‘ The worst Mistakes in Chilean Restaurants ‘ )
1. The love for avocado
Chilean and avocados have an intense, fiery and many times misunderstood relationship.
Since young age eating Marraquetas (called also French bread) with this popular fruit at breakfast … and yes! We eat it with oil and salt.
Accompanying salads, ceviches, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas and even sushi. Avocados is involved and attached to the hearts of Chileans!
I can tell you when I travel, one of the things I miss the most is an avocado toast with Hass Avocado …. pure pleasure for the palate!
2. The wobbly tables
From a humble restaurant in a market down to the most fancy places, in Chilean restaurants there is something almost inevitable: to find a wobbly table.
You can find some that you have almost not to touch them to avoid everything rolling or falling when someone leans their hands on them. To fix this, the most diverse creations to solve it, from pieces of paperboard to soda caps placed under them.
3. Massive Mayonnaise
Something that many foreigners notice is the close relationship that Chileans have with mayonnaise.
If you order a sandwich or a hotdog in a Chilean Restaurant you’ll find out it will come with amounts of mayonnaise you have probably never seen before for this accompaniment. If you’re not a fan of it ask before your food arrives and order your dish without it.
4. Street Food
The Chilean street food options includes mostly fried things (like Sopaipillas) and the unique Completos and Italianos, the Chilean version of the hotdog and they include fillings as varied as avocado, tomatoes, sauerkraut and …. tons of mayonnaise!
The variety of healthy foods available on the street it is not too big, and if you can find some vendors selling some healthy snacks don’t expect to find  too many fresh fruits ready to eat and juices on the Chilean streets.
5. Tips included on the bill
As an agreement in Chilean restaurants since many years people are tipping with a 10% of the total, but lately I’ve seen in some restaurants they bring you the bill with this percentage already included as a total, then it’s a good idea to double-check it and see if it’s included or not, unless you want to pay extra and double tip.
How’s been your experience with food in Chile? Â Do you have any funny story happening to you?

Do you have any plans already?
🙂
I love avocado so that would be awesome for me! If they’re anything like the avocados in Brazil I’m sure they’re delicious. I like mayo too, but maybe not in such large quantities 🙂
