Kaštela
If you are searching for a place that doesn’t draw a huge crowd and is very likely to offer up the sunshine, look into Kaštela, Croatia. Located to the west of Split, the town of Kaštela is actually a group of seven charming little villages that hug the Dalmatian coast.
These villages were originally formed around “castles” in the 15th and 16th centuries. Over time, they have evolved into smaller fishing villages with unique buildings and stories to tell. These days, their quaint vibes make for a quiet place to relax, soak up the sun on the rocky beaches, explore some local historic sites, and indulge in fresh, authentic cuisine by the sea. We spent time in Kaštel Kambelovac but walked the path along the shoreline that weaves through every village – like the popular Kaštel Gomilica.
One of the key reasons why Kaštela makes for a great getaway is because a roadway with a good bus connection runs close by and directly connects Split Airport to the city of Split – with the villages located in the middle of the two. For hot and sunny weather, the best time to visit Kaštela is certainly in the summer months. However, we visited in the shoulder season during April and the weather was still very nice. Hvar
Getting away from it all on the island of Hvar is a dream come true. The pace of life slows down and it’s amazing how quickly you’ll fall into relaxed vacation mode.
Start your day with a coffee and some people-watching in St. Stephen’s Square in the center of town. It’s a lively spot with restaurants and souvenir carts that borders the harbor filled with luxurious yachts. From the main square, you can take a leisurely stroll down the Milna Coastal Walk past the trendy beach clubs or venture into the maze of cobblestone streets and alleys of the incredibly charming Hvar town. You’ll walk past restaurants, bars, and shops that you could spend hours exploring.
At the highest point above the town is a 16th-century Fortress with incredible views of the harbor and Pakleni Islands. During your holiday, you should definitely plan a day trip by boat to the Pakleni Islands or one of the organized blue and green cave tours.
For those that rent a car, you’ll be able to relax on the beautiful beaches of Dubovica, Lucisca, and Milna. Also lovely is a trip to the Hvar lavender fields or the neighboring towns of Stari Grad or Jelsa. It’s an opportunity to get a view of the quieter side of Hvar. That said, don’t miss the nightlife back in Hvar town. This Adriatic island is known for its ability to host a good party.

Peak District
If you’re an outdoor lover and looking to totally unwind and reconnect with nature, the Peak District, the UK’s oldest National Park, is my favorite place in Europe to do just that.
Off the radar for many overseas travelers to the UK, the Peak District is just a 40-minute drive from Manchester International Airport, yet standing on the craggy edge of one of the Peak District’s escarpments, overlooking the expansive landscape of green rolling hills and quaint villages below, you will feel a million miles away.
You can also take a Derbyshire and Peak District Day Trip from Manchester
Grab an Ordnance Survey map and hiking boots and head for a hike in the hills. Whilst Mam Tor in the North, or Dovedale Stepping Stones in the South, are popular hiking destinations, perhaps head to Curbar Edge or the rolling hills around Monyash, which will be much quieter. And a visit to the grand Chatsworth Estate is a must. Wander the grounds for free, pop into the house to marvel the history, or perhaps go wild swimming in the Derwent River!
Alternatively, hire a bike and cycle along the miles upon miles of disused railway tracks that criss-cross the National Park. These have been transformed into gravel paths that are entirely traffic-free. The Monsal Trail or Tissington Trail are our favorites.
Then reward your efforts with a pint of Peak Ale and a home-cooked roast dinner in one of the many characterful old pubs dotted across the National Park. Don’t worry about getting changed, muddy boots are always welcome.

Etretat, Normandy
Etretat is one of the most beautiful places in Normandy and in France. The impressive white cliffs have inspired many artists through the centuries (such as Claude Monet) and will help you reconnect with Nature, relax and detox with the fresh sea air. Along the Cote d’Albatre, the cliffs are constantly sculpted by the sea.
Etretat is where you find a concentration of arches and sea stacks. The most famous of those is l’Aiguille Creuse (meaning the hollow needle) where Arsène Lupin, the famous character from Maurice Leblanc’s stories, has hidden a treasure. But the most impressive one is Manneporte, a giant 50m-high arch inside an 80m-high cliff.
You can have different experiences: You can either hike up the chalk cliffs on both sides and enjoy long walks. The sea views will mesmerize you. Or you can explore the bottom of the cliffs at low tide, even entering tunnels to reach other beaches. A real adventure! Even with only a short vacation here, you can see the tides changing the landscapes and feel the power of Nature.

Etretat is magnificent all year long, but more accommodations are open from Spring to Autumn. However, if you love photography, March and October offer better alignment for the sunset with the arch.

Turku, or Finland, might not be top of your list when considering places to escape for the weekend in Europe – but that is part of its incredible appeal. Tucked away in the north-east of Europe, Turku is an enigma, an excellent secret destination full of local charm and personality – without the crowds. A short vacation with a difference. It’s wonderfully weird, completely original, and utterly welcoming to everyone. Turku is also not too big, meaning you can easily see all the top highlights on a short trip.
Centered around the dreamy River Aura – the heart and soul of the city – Turku has a stimulating fusion of historic buildings, contemporary design, delectable dining, relaxed cafes, and buzzing nightlife. It’s often called the Paris of Finland, and it isn’t hard to see why. Hydra Island
The island of Hydra off the coast of mainland Greece is a great destination for a short holiday in Europe because it offers the laid-back atmosphere of island life while also being easily accessible from Athens. Located in the Argo Saronic Gulf, Hydra is just a short ferry ride from Piraeus, Athens (around 2 hours) and with ferries leaving around five times a day throughout the peak season you’ll always be able to find a connection that works for you.
Hydra is also a popular day trip from Athens but it is perfect for a short holiday as well. One of the things that are particularly charming about Hydra is that there are no cars on the island, with everyone using boats, donkeys, or their own two feet to get around. This is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the capital and will instantly help you relax!
Add this to the picturesque harbor of Hydra Town, with its white-washed, terracotta-roofed houses and colorful fishing boats and you have a stunning destination for a serene getaway. Of course, being a Greek island Hydra has some wonderful beaches with clear blue waters to enjoy (although most of them are pebbled) but if you want a few other things to see and do you’re in luck. Hydra has a number of different museums such as the Ecclesiastical Museum, the Melina Merkouri Auditorium, and the Historical Archives Museum as well as a plethora of churches to explore and there are some wonderful hiking trails to discover in spring.

The Golden Circle
Iceland makes the perfect trip for whatever time you have for your holiday leave. Its capital Reykjavik is perfect for a unique city trip for a day or two. But if you want to add some of Iceland’s natural wonders to your trip, get a rental car and drive the Golden Circle nearby Reykjavik. You can finish the whole trip in one day, but take at least two to have enough time for all the sights.
The Golden Circle is about three big highlights of Iceland: Geysir, Gullfoss en Þingvellir. The national park of Þingvellir is your first stop. It’s great for a nature walk, but most famous for standing in between two continents. The continents of Europe and Northern America are still moving apart, so the gorge is getting larger each year.
Your next stop is Geysir, where you could spend the night at one of the campsites, cabins or hotels. This geothermal area is home to a gigantic geyser. It’s a unique phenomenon to watch and experience and if you book a place to sleep in the area, you’ll have the chance to enjoy it without the crowds. That also gives you the opportunity to head to the Gullfoss waterfalls before the tour buses from Reykjavik arrive. The cascade waterfall is 20 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers long, making it one of the biggest in Iceland.
You can finish your trip and head back to the airport in Keflavik or to the capital Reykjavik. But you might want to spend some time in a natural hot spring or the famous ones at the Blue Lagoon before you go.

Sligo
Sligo, nestled on the west coast of Ireland, is a fabulous location for a short holiday in Europe. While Sligo has undoubtedly always been a great place to visit, the release of the recent hit series Normal People, which was largely filmed there, has resulted in even more people being captivated by its charm!
Stunning lakes, rivers, beaches, and the iconic Ben Bulben mountain continue to inspire the imagination of all who visit. This landscape was home to the famous Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet and playwright, W. B. Yeats, and his imprint and legacy can still be seen in Sligo today. Pay a visit to the Yeats’s Building in Sligo town, Lissadell House, or to Yeats’s famous gravestone in Drumcliff Church graveyard to indulge in Ireland’s heritage and literary past.
As well as soaking up the breathtaking scenery, you can also take a soak in an Edwardian style seaweed bath in Enniscrone. This is certainly a detox treat with a difference and certainly not one to be missed! Other unique experiences abound in Sligo from exploring the archaeologically and mythically significant Caves of Keash to watching the dogs from the Atlantic Sheepdogs in action. Sligo is also a paradise for hikers with plenty of walks suitable for all ages and abilities. Malta
Malta is one of the smallest countries in Europe, which makes it an ideal destination for a short break.
This tiny island in the Mediterranean offers stunning beaches as well as ancient sites and historic cities. This means you can pair a couple of days at the beach with a trip to the capital, Valletta, which is quite a compact city and can be explored in just a day. Another must-visit place in Mdina, a small fortified city with quiet, pretty alleys. Also, make sure to check out the island’s Prehistoric temples, such as the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra temples, which are among the oldest standing structures in the world(they’re older than the Pyramids!).
If you would rather visit Malta on a short sun-and-sea holiday, spend the day soaking up the sun at some of the island’s beautiful sandy beaches, including Golden Bay, Paradise Bay, Gnejna Bay, and Ghadira Bay. Not a fan of sandy beaches? Gozo island
Gozo is the sister island of Malta, a usually overlooked place since Malta gets most of the credits! However, this little gem is really worth a visit, especially for a short vacation! Laidback villages, an amazing old town (Victoria Citadella), some beautiful beaches (Ramla bay for example with its reddish sand), Medieval towers, quaint seaside towns (Xlendi, Marsafornn) and hiking paths that can take you to an otherworld, make Gozo ideal for an unwind vacation.
Most of the tourists visit Gozo for one day but I highly recommend giving it a go for a little longer! My favorite place on the island? A long walk at the Salt Pans– a landscape that looks surreal especially for Europe! Oh yes, you can but local salt there too!

Since it is an island, if one wants to swim and enjoy some beach time, summer is the ideal season! If you want to avoid the crowds (Gozo never gets TOO busy but it can still be) just skip July and August and visit it either September or May. I prefer September cause the seawater will be warmer than in May. If you don’t bother about the sea (or you can’t stand the hot weather) any other season will be great since winter doesn’t really touch the island. Yes, it can be cold, windy and rainy some days but nothing close to Central or North Europe!

Kotor
Kotor is one of the best places to visit in Montenegro and a perfect destination for a short holiday in Europe. Not only the town is the prettiest, with the charming old part, narrow winding lanes, and beautiful palaces but it has the jaw-dropping location at the end of the fjord, surrounded by high mountains.
The best place to look at Kotor from above is St. John’s fortress – it is a bit challenging to get up there (there are around 1300 stairs to the top but you don’t need to go all the way up for amazing views) but it’s worth all the effort. Kotor can be also a good base for some day trips around -the easiest ones are hiking in the nearby mountains and visiting the mausoleum at Jezierski Vrh from where you can see a big part of the country or going to Lake Skadar – the largest lake in the Balkans, perfect for bird-watching.
There are also numerous small, charming towns and villages along Kotor Bay that are a perfect getaway from Kotor. The most popular is Perast but other good choices are Dobrota, Muo, or Prcanj. If you feel like relaxing at the beach it is possible to do it in Kotor too, however, the local beach is rather small, but you can also enjoy the stunning views of Kotor Bay when sunbathing.

North Macedonia
Ohrid
Ohrid, North Macedonia, is a beautiful place for a short break. The small city nestled beside the 34km-wide Lake Ohrid is ideal for an easy holiday due to the close proximity of the historical old town attractions – almost everything is walking distance! Looking out over the expansive lake – or swimming or sunbathing beside it in summer – is also the perfect way to unwind. The city has been declared both a Natural and Historical World Heritage site.
Historical attractions include the magnificent Church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo. This 13th-century Byzantine-style Orthodox church lies directly beside the lake making it a stunning sunset spot. Plaosnik, built-in 893, the medieval Samuel Fortress, and the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid are all wonderful examples of North Macedonia throughout the ages.
Other things to do in Ohrid include taking a walk around the lake using the winding pathways or boardwalk, taking a boat trip, and visiting a 16th-century monastery or hiking at the nearby Galicica National Park. There are hundreds of churches and historic gems to explore or, alternatively, you can lay back and relax on one of the city beaches

In the summer (July-early September) for warm enough weather to swim in the lake. Spring for quieter crowds, mild weather, and hiking. Autumn (October, November) is a great time to visit if you don’t mind the rain. It’s very quiet to explore in the off-season.

Bergen
Bergen is a beautiful city UNESCO World Heritage city located on the coast of western Norway. While the city is the gateway to the fjords it is also a wonderful place to explore and discover for a short break.
One of the main attractions in Bergen is Bryggen. This is the site of the beautiful Hanseatic wharf and buildings. This area was the hub of all trade in the city in the Middle Ages. The colorful wooden buildings that line the wharf appears in many photographs of Bergen and can’t be missed.
Explore the area behind Bryggen where you will find lots of quirky shops and cafes before heading over to the fish market – Torget I Bergen. The fish market has existed since the 1200s and although it is quite touristy it is worth a visit.
After exploring the city head up Mount Floyen on the funicular and enjoy fabulous views of the area.
When to visit Bergen
Bergen is a wonderful city to visit at any time of year. In winter make sure you wrap up warmly and wear sensible footwear. The temperatures can be bitter with icy winds and regular snowfalls.

Poland
Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot (Tri-City)
Gdansk, Sopot, and Gdynia located in the northwestern part of Poland and are commonly referred to as Tri-City is a popular vacation spot along the Baltic Sea. While Gdansk is a popular place because of its old town with carefully restored architecture, many museums and rich history and culture, Sopot and Gdynia are known for their beaches and spa resorts.
You can take a trip to Sopot and Gdynia from Gdansk after sightseeing around the Old Town, and learning about the role that this city played in world history. The best way to do so is by visiting the Museum of the Second World War or the European Center of Solidarity.
Some of the must-see spots in Gdansk Old Town are the Town Hall of the Old City, Zielona Brama (the Green Gate), Dlugi Targ (Long Market), The Royal Way, and the Long Waterfront (Dlugie Pobrzeze). Also, don’t forget to check out the Crane (Zuraw), Zlota Brama (Golden Gate) and the unmissable highlight of the Old Town – St. Mary’s Basilica. Climb to the top of this Gothic church to get a birds-eye view of Gdansk and the surrounding area!
The easiest way to travel between these cities is by train. Take a train from Gdank’s train station called Gdansk Glowny to Gdynia and from Gdynia, continue to Sopot where you can relax at the beach, and walk along the long pier.

Zakopane
Poland would have to be one of our favorite places to visit. It is such a beautiful country, the people are amazing and the food is a foodies delight. We have visited some of its main cities and then we have spent time out in the rural areas with our friends. On one of our trips, we were able to visit Zakopane.
Zakopane is a delight to visit. From snow-covered mountains to wonderful markets it has something for everyone. While many people do not consider it as a holiday destination we believe that you are really missing out if you don’t go there at least once. It is a wonderful place for a short visit to Europe.
In the winter you can ski, sled, and enjoy a vodka to warm up after spending the days on the slopes.
During the summer you can hike, see the local market and then enjoy an amazing dinner or lunch for a fraction of what it would cost in many other cities around Europe. All while enjoying the beautiful sun.
You can venture out into the Tatra Mountains to sample some traditional Polish cheese in one of the small wooden huts that are dotted all over the mountains.
Zakopane is the perfect rest stop for a longer time in Poland or just for a special few days away but it is definitely worth a visit.

Óbidos
Most people visit Óbidos for just a couple of hours as a quick day trip from Lisbon. And while it’s a very small town, there are definitely enough things to do in Óbidos to warrant spending an entire short holiday here. For one, the town has no less than 14 bookstores, many of which are hidden inside unique locations, including an organic market and a deconsecrated church. You can even sleep among the books at a book-themed hotel called The Literary Man.
Another advantage of making Óbidos your base is that you’ll be able to experience the peace and quiet of the early morning and the evening after all the daytrippers have cleared out. A walk along the town’s medieval ramparts at this time of day is spectacular. You’ll also have plenty of time to relax in the town’s many cafés and bar and sample the local cherry liqueur, known as ginjinha.
Óbidos is a remarkably well-preserved medieval town with a very rich cultural and architectural heritage. This is thanks in large part to the Queens of Portugal who was the town’s patrons for many centuries. It became a tradition for the king to give the town to his bridge as a wedding present. Just a few kilometers outside of Óbidos is the Óbidos Lagoon, which has some lovely beaches and is also great for kitesurfing.

Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj, in Triglav National Park in Slovenia, is a fabulous place to go for a short holiday. Set in the midst of the beautiful Julian Alps, Lake Bohinj is a tranquil, beautiful spot, away from tourist crowds. Perfect for that relaxing getaway!
You can do nothing other than just relax in the beauty of your surroundings, but if you prefer activity, there are lots of fun things to do at Lake Bohinj! You can take the cable car up to the top of Mount Vogel, on the west end of the lake, for magnificent views over the lake and the surrounding countryside. You can hike to the gorgeous Slap Savica, one of Slovenia’s most photographed waterfalls.
On the east side of the lake, visit the little Church of Saint John the Baptist, or take photos of the beautiful stone bridge with the church in the background. On the other side of the bridge, watch the waters flow into the rushing Sava River, where you can go rafting.
You can walk, or bike, around the lakeshore, stopping often to take in the beauty and to snap photos. You can take a canoe out on to the lake, or go stand-up paddleboarding. Look for wildflowers in the spring, and admire the leaf colors in the fall.
Lake Bohinj is indeed a beautiful gem that you will want to return to again and again!

Cabo de Gata
Cabo de Gata Natural Park in the province of Almeria in southern Spain is a vast desert land meeting rugged cliffs and secluded beaches. There is a huge space so even the most popular beaches in Cabo de Gata don’t get overcrowded in summer. You can hike from the beach to the beach and experience unique small beaches otherwise only reached by boat.
The most popular beaches are Los Muertos beach which demands a steep rocky hike to get to, Los Genoveses Beach, and Monsul Beach. The latter is without a doubt one of the most beautiful, though if you cross the hot desert to the next one, Barronal Beach, you can forget about the modern world and enjoy the sound of the Mediterranean waves gently meeting the sand.
Another favorite beach, which is starting to become more popular among backpackers in the summer months, is Cala de San Pedro, which is the only beach in Spain where it is “allowed” to camp. While it’s not allowed by law, the police let it go and only patrol the coastline to make sure everything is fine. The cove is inhabited by hippies and if you look closely you find small houses blending in with nature. If you go to Cala de San Pedro, it is important that you follow the rules, use the toilets set up, and bring your rubbish with you back from there.

Seville is one of the rather famous cities in Spain. No surprises there! It has a lot to offer to a curious traveler. It is an epicenter of the passionate dance form of Flamenco. Maybe they call it Flamenco because the passion of the dancers literally engulfs the stage in flame. But, unfortunately, that is not the reason why is it called Flamenco.
The literal translation of Flamenco is ‘Wandering Peasants’ or ‘Landless Peasants’. The dance format practically presents a wide range of emotions which makes the dance full of energy and passion. In addition to Flamenco, there are many more reasons to visit Seville.
A fan of architecture will have a dropped jaw upon seeing the perfect and aligned streets. These cobbled streets are really impressive and the entire vibe of the city is medieval. Add a few horse carriages passing through these streets and you have a glimpse in the lifestyle of yesteryear.
There are quite a few attractions in Seville; Catedral de Sevilla, Real Alcazar, Plaza de España, and many more. If you really want to dip yourself in this culturally rich city, try planning your visit during Santa Semana (Holy Week Festival). It is an important festival in Spain, leading up to Easter. If you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind in Europe, the west coast of Sweden is perhaps one of the most serene places you could visit. You’ll also want to spend at least one night on the Weather Islands, the archipelago that spreads across the west Sweden coast. Most of the 365 islands that make up the Weather Islands are rocky, rugged, and uninhabited. It is the perfect destination for someone looking to unwind and get far away from the more crowded areas of Europe.
Accessible by a 30-minute boat ride from the town of Fjallbacka, you can take a short day trip to the Weather Islands, take a guided tour through the archipelago in hopes of spotting one of the colonies of seals that call the islands their home, or spend a relaxing night.
