Santiago is a city that has a lot to offer. Restaurants and coffee shops with different kind of products and styles. (Click here if you wanna know more about the wonderful Santiago)
Traditional Chilean pastry is not my favorite, but when I hear the word ‘French’ my interest changed instantly.
I arrive to this French Bakery in Santiago thanks to a friend who gave me one the most delicious orange cake I have ever eaten, impressed with the texture and flavor offered to us that evening.
The following comment was:
If you go for the first time they will make you a tasting of all the products they have!
Of course in a few minutes I was on the inside of this little coffee shop and bakery with a cheerful name: Lala Leelu.
Upon arrival two very happy girls greeted us and first question was if it’s our first time in the place, against our affirmation begins the festival of flavors. We tried almost every small pieces of cake they had to offer that day, each piece followed with the most sensual words and sounds….all for this delicious flavors we were trying for the first time.
Chef Young offers other preparations that are not on the menu to taste, with the only intention of giving customers the opportunity to try new flavor combinations and to experience different ways of preparation. I must admit that this is what made me absolutely fell in love with this place, that day we also tried the usual pastries plus a cared selection including pears carmenère and the most delicious macarrons I’ve ever eaten in my life, when I came back I realized with sadness only Young prepares this little pieces of heaven for its tastings (good move because if you try them you’ll be going back for more!)
Located in Providencia district, steps from Santa Isabel Metro station, this place is now one of my favorites in the Chilean capital.
Run by its owners, a chef couple who met in Australia while studying in French culinary school Le Cordon Bleu.
After traveling to different countries and living in Australia and Canada working in the best luxury hotels, where Young’s baking motivation born, they wanted to offer first class products with very high quality but accessible to the common customer. Amy and Young had for many years the idea of creating their own place to create their delicacies. They had Korea, Taiwan, Canada and Chile in their minds, decided to stay in Santiago Chile.
The patisserie they offer in Lala Leelu is changing organically, as Amy and Young creativity is expressing and according to products available in every season. In Lalaleelu they have approached the high quality pastry to the ordinary citizen.
Located in an emerging neighborhood as Barrio Italia, where diversity exists in the restaurants offer, to me, they are one of the highest quality bakeries within the city.
What caught my attention is that Lalaleelu it is a small place (there are only 6 tables), with a family atmosphere. Its owners are always on site to explain about their products, asking how was your experience on the site. Even the waitresses are very attentive, kind and patient with people who ask as much as I do!
For now they only have to offer sweet pastry and a wonderful bread with a special preparation with very different and careful bakery fermentation. As its customers number has grown, they have thought to grow the place and extend his menu to savory options such as salads and sandwichs with the bread baked at LalaLeelu.
Lalaleelu’s main concept is it to offer cakes that they would serve to their children and relatives, this is why they choose to not incorporate artificial flavors or colors, they made everything using seasonal products and fresh fruits, they even make their own sauces and fruit pulps for the pastry. Amy tells us:
“Every customer who leaves happy and smiling Lala Leelu suggest that our persistence is worth it.”
Working with chef Guy Vaugeois, Young learned not only techniques but the working attitude, being a passionate chef about food not for the people, most important for him is to make simple and good quality products, because taste it is all, not do this for fame or trend. It is because of this that chef Young continues the legacy of chef Vaugeois, keeping good taste above all.
In Lalaleelu they care about good service. Using fresh and home made products that it is clear shown in their pastries preparation, cakes like the most simple Cheesecake or Opera cake are some classic creations they try to respect and to represent at their best way those names.
If you are in Santiago de Chile, you can finish your tour of the places you should not miss in Santiago in Lalaleelu Bakery. After a long walk in the Persa Biobio Market or in the city center, do not miss the opportunity to delight your palate and your senses with some delicious French pastries and greet their owners!
